The People of REMAP audio

David Beaudry

Although best known for his eclectic mix of sound design work, David Beaudry is also considered one of the top professional clarinetists in Los Angeles. He received a Doctorate in Clarinet Performance from UCLA in 2002, and performs extensively throughout Los Angeles and beyond with such renowned groups as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Pasadena Pops, the California Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, as well as many of the major studios in Los Angeles.

David's own work has often deviated from the traditional path of a classically trained clarinetist, expanding his playing to include computer-mediated music and sound performance. His pieces often explore the sociological and behavioral relationships between performer, audience, space, sound and music in live performance through the use of immerging technology. He has by extension developed many sonic experiences in the form of installations, dynamic sound worlds for virtual reality, mixed reality concerts, and immersive sound designs for theater. He has authored many software-based tools dealing with interactivity, sound, and space in the context of live performance. His sound designs and performance pieces have been heard in major shows and venues throughout the world.

In addition to his performance and research work, David has developed and taught many cross-disciplinary courses at UCLA's Department of Theater as a Visiting Assistant Professor and as a member of the Faculty in the Graduate Program in Industrial Design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He is currently the Associate Director for the Center for Research in Engineering, Media, and Performance (REMAP), where he leads research efforts in sound technology and applications of new technology to live performance.
