Marty Sklar Entertainment Innovation Fellowship 2022
UCLA REMAP is pleased to announce the second annual call for applications for the Marty Sklar Entertainment Innovation Fellowship.
We invite applicants from across UCLA who are interested in significant roles in research and production at the UCLA Center for Research in Engineering, Media and Performance (REMAP) to apply to The Marty Sklar Entertainment Innovation Fellowship. The Fellowship was established in 2020 by the family of Martin A. Sklar to support UCLA students participating in major collaborative projects at REMAP that interweave the physical and digital worlds to share new kinds of stories, and engage with the legacy and future of themed entertainment.
The Fellowship supports graduates and undergraduates from the School of Theater, Film, and Television and other disciplines. Each fellow receives $10,000 and must create or participate in at least one major collaborative project at REMAP over the course of Spring 2022–Fall 2022, as well as training and community-building activities.
This year, fellows will participate in one of three areas of work at REMAP:
- The Civic Bicycle Commuting (CiBiC) project, a National Science Foundation-funded effort to reimagine bicycle commuting in Los Angeles by enabling, supporting and celebrating community bike-to-work flows. CiBiC prioritizes transportation satisfaction and safety over efficiency and integrates ride data and riders’ input to generate digital media exhibitions of the emerging collective mobility identity.
- Research, development and prototyping related to the use of augmented reality (AR) in live performance, building on experience from recent productions and applying it to a new adaptation of a Hugo Award-winning novel (planned for 2023).
- Exploration of techniques, applications and ethics of machine learning applied to projects in the arts, with a focus on one or both of the projects listed above.
Please clearly indicate your interest on your application.
The application process is open to all full-time UCLA students in good academic standing with a minimum required GPA of 3.25. Applications are due by March 1, 2022, and we expect to announce the 2022 Sklar Fellows ahead of Spring Quarter 2022. We anticipate granting three awards during this academic year.
Applicants must provide the following in a single email to sklar-fellowship@remap.ucla.edu:
- Letter of application (no more than 2 pages, PDF format, with name and contact email) introducing the applicant, describing how this fellowship relates to their own academic and professional trajectory and discussing specific interests in one or more of the projects.
- Letter of recommendation specific to the selected project.
- Unofficial transcript.
Fellows will meet (virtually) with the donor and be asked to provide regular updates on their activities.
